Sexually active schoolgirls say one swallow doesn't make a summer

Summer is liberating, the warmth bringing out schoolgirls onto the streets to
enjoy their break from class, but also exposing them to all sorts of dangers
and temptations, according to Josei Seven.
One late July night, a crackdown by cops on entertainment areas in the capital
netted an astounding 1,288 girls taken into custody for various offenses.
Though most of the misdemeanors were comparatively minor, such as underage
drinking and smoking, the huge number of girls involved stands as testimony to
their presence on the streets at night.
Josei Seven polled 250 junior high schoolgirls and 750 girls from high school,
all selected randomly from the entertainment districts of Shinjuku and Shibuya
to determine how they were spending their summer vacation.
A vast majority of the surveyed girls had no curfew, while the average was
10:15 p.m. for the high schoolgirls and 30 minutes earlier for the junior high
kids.
Nearly all the girls received pocket money, the most common amount being 20,000
yen a month, but the average was 6,328 yen for junior high schoolgirls and
21,341 yen as they got older. Most girls admitted their parents gave them more
money if they ran out, while one third-year junior high schoolgirl said she
threatened to go into prostitution to make money for herself if her parents
ever refused to give her the cash she demanded.
Several girls admitted to turning tricks or working in the adult entertainment
industry to supplement their income.
"There's a group of us that are going to do the one-day trial at a hostess club
which pays cash for anybody undergoing the experiment," a second-year high
schoolgirl tells Josei Seven. "We just want the money."
An alarming 34 percent of high school girls and 5 percent of junior high school
girls admitted to having at least once accepted money from a man for performing
some sort of sexual service.
Many of the girls also complained about the adult industry "talent scouts" who
approach them on the streets with the lure of "easy money" that is actually
made performing sordid tasks. One of those talent scouts tells the women's
weekly that schoolgirls are a preferred target, but not always for lurid labor.
"There're all different types of scouts, like for hostessing jobs, sex
businesses, porn movies and even the legitimate entertainment world. I've found
the easiest way to get high school girls on my books has been to offer them
work as extras on TV shows. I ask for their phone numbers and promise to
contact them at a later date. There's a 60,000 yen charge for registering with
a talent agency and some of the girls pay up because they want to be on TV,"
the scout tells Josei Seven. "I supply about 30 names and addresses a day and
get paid about 10,000 yen."
Work with schoolgirls has slowed down for the scout recently, courtesy of a
newly revised Tokyo Metropolitan Government ordinance promising harsher
punishments of those exploiting the underaged.
"No way known would I ever try to recruit a girl in a school uniform now," the
scout says.
Tokyo's teens are also sexually active. Among junior high school girls, 72
percent confessed to still being virgins, but the figure plummeted to just 6
percent among girls at high school. But many say they intend to adopt a more
chaste approach to this summer.
"Last year, I really went for my life. I must have made it with about 20 guys,"
a first-year high school girl says. "I'm not going to do that this year,
though. I'm scared of AIDS. Even so, when I do give in to the urge, I almost
never use a rubber."
Having expanded her horizons in the past, another high school girl, this one in
her second year, is happy to go about a more concentrated plan of attack.
"I've stopped going along when some guy tries to pick me up off the streets, so
I haven't done it with anybody new for a while," the schoolgirl tells Josei
Seven. "Instead, I've got myself a new boyfriend and we're going at it like
rabbits."
