Race queens in Japan

I would like to question the sincerity of many of Japan's so-called Formula One enthusiasts. Tell me, how can the poor spectator concentrate on the race when the event's hottest bodywork is found prancing along its sidelines? It appears that the Formula One is as much about cars as about girls.

We are already distracted enough by cheerleaders in Japan, something that the Japanese borrowed from the Americans, and made it into their own version with girls essentially behaving as some kind of lower-level creatures designed to entertain Japanese boys. Race Queens (video of race queens) seem to represent a truly Japanese phenomenon and they epitomize all of the utterly wonderful things about the perfect Japanese female body - curves, shapely legs, and high-heeled shoes. Perfect, no? It is mildly exploitative of women, but then I think MyNippon tackles this issue really well - celebrating Japanese feminine beauty.

MYNIPPON has been consistently trying to bring the beauty of Japanese women to the rest of the world in the most artistic and tasteful manner possible. If you travel to Japan, you may even have the chance to witness the unearthly, ultra-fashionable Tokyo girls, delicately strutting the Shibuya sidewalks in their micro-mini skirts, holding shopping bags containing their latest Louis Vuitton bags, Chanel dresses or European lingerie.

Who is a racequeen?
Readers, you ain't seen nothing yet: Japanese 'Race Queens' get the crown every time! For those unfamiliar with this perfect female specimen, let me WARN you of what to expect. The hallmark of a Race Queen is, without doubt, her silky Lycra dress, brightly emblazoned with the sponsor's logo, often too short even to conceal the gusset of her knickers. She will often carry the sponsor's matching umbrella too! This is surely the best thousand bucks an advertiser in Japan can spend. A natural, irrepressible human instinct compels potential male (and jealous female) consumers to gaze hypnotically at the shapely body squeezed inside the costume. It certainly is a tight fit. If you ever had the privilege of undressing one of these girls, as some lucky drivers get to do, you would have to practically PEEL her silky dress off. Her inexhaustible sex appeal does not stop with the dress. A Race Queen nearly always wears (typically Japanese) white, ankle-strapped, high-heeled shoes, which offset her wonderful skin color. And her ultra-sheer tights will make her legs pale and shiny like a silver birch.

Such a delicate, shy creature looks uncomfortable, knees pointing slightly inwards, so erotically clad in the clear light of the day. It is as if she doesn't really fit the part. Perhaps this apparently gentle, unostentatious character is one of the things that makes them so utterly desirable to their fans. In fact, her legs are quite attractive - pale and fleshy, REAL, yet perfectly formed.

For many, the real intrigue is the question of what she is wearing underneath her skimpy dress. As Natsuko, a Japanese girl, who had this strong urge to dress in a Race Queen costume and can not figure out what type of underwear would be suitable, recently posted in a message on a message board, “I need to dress like a Race Queen for a party. Does anyone know of a good place to get the outfit? Also, do Race Queens wear any underwear, and if so, what kind?" Thus, it is clear that even among Japanese women, the dressing trick of race queens is still a secret.

Given how short the skirt used by race queens are, it would certainly be illegal to go without panties, as some Japanese girls choose to do in summer. Yet Lycra, being such a thin, revealing material (especially the popular semitransparent white Lycra), would surely expose her panty-line if she were wearing a pair? Sure enough, very close observation will reveal her lacy thin thong and discreet, strapless bra. She is heavily made-up - definite scarlet lips, subtle blue eye shadow, thick, dark eyelashes, a smooth white face like flawless marble - but she doesn't need to be. The picture is complete.

Watching race queens
While Race Queen spotting, there are slight variations in appearance worth looking out for. Often, white high-heeled, thigh-high boots will replace her dainty mules or pumps. Separate hot pants and 'boob-tube' may be worn instead of the customary dress. Alternatively, a separate mini-skirt may have a slit right up to her waist, revealing the shoestring of her knickers. You might be lucky enough to see Race Queens in opaque white stockings, suspenders disappearing up her dress, with elbow-length lace gloves to match. But surely the spectacle of the day is the Race Queen reduced to wearing only a tight color-coded bikini with her regular high heels and sheer tights.

As the gathering crowds and photographers zoom in on the most intimate parts of her body, with bigger and better lenses, she is glad she waxes her bikini-line every morning. She knows she is perfect. Even alongside a dozen of her equally perfect Race Queen friends, she is still nervous. In the background, the checkered flag is waved, the race is over, and no one seem to care when there is something more exciting to watch!

The Japanese society has sexualized women to a point that they are not even human beings any more – they are essentially erotic toys designed to entertain men and provide motivation to other women who try to compete with them so that they can themselves follow similar strategies to attract men in their lives. There is no newspaper or magazine in Japan, either for men or women, that does not talk about women or does not have pictures of scantily clad or almost nude girls barely out of their teens. Whether they assume the roles of elevator girls, idols, models, talent girls, or campaign girls, they are essentially expected to entertain middle-aged Japanese salarymen who have no desire for their wives taking care of the kids at home. Is it just like the passion for sushi – fresh and sweet – in all aspects of Japanese society?
