53 human trafficking victims suspected among deported in February

July 6, 2004

Fifty-three of the 3,517 people who were deported by immigration bureaus across the country in February were probably victims of human trafficking, a government reply issued at a Cabinet meeting has stated.

The government said 34 of the suspected victims were from Thailand, 16 from the Philippines, and one each from South Korea, Indonesia and Colombia. It is the first time the government has provided concrete figures on the number of victims.

The government also announced that 144 people, including 83 Japanese, have been indicted over human trafficking.

The government's reply was given in response to questions by House of Councillors Member Satoshi Inoue.

Last month the United States placed Japan on a human trafficking watch list, with the U.S. State Department downgrading its assessment of Japan's efforts to prevent human trafficking to the lowest level of all Group of Eight countries in its fiscal 2004 annual report.
