China: Veiled prostitution sites closed

Not widely celebrated as the most tolerant and liberal of countries with regard to state-imposed Internet-based censorship, a Chinese Internet watchdog consisting of government officials and Net experts has this week executed a strict clampdown on a dozen supposed dating Web sites that it believes are serving as convenient cover for the spread of online prostitution.

The Web sites in question have been given until this coming Friday to realign their content, with the Beijing Online News and Information Panel watchdog revealing via an official statement that: "The outrageous pimping content in some Websites is shocking."

According to a related report published by the Shanghai Daily, the dozen Web sites falling under the watchdog's scrutiny are crammed with information directly linked to the world of prostitution, including available services, charging rates, and personal contact details. The Beijing-based team of officials, experts and Netizens preparing to drop the hammer on the dating sites, should they fail to cull said contentious material, claims that in excess of, "95 percent of the Websites'content," is sexually explicit information and detailing.

By way of example, sexual data and details found on one particular lonely-hearts posting describes a young woman with a fair complexion who considers herself as a "professional pleasure giver." Naturally, some may argue that such terminology is not necessarily a convoluted admission of prostitution, though the likelihood of said individual merely enjoying making people smile for a set hourly rate is unlikely.at best.

"Aiding and abetting the spread of prostitution information in pursuit of a higher hit rate may be against the law," outlined Min Dahong, director of the watchdog panel in regard to the collection of sites, which have been told to remove all offending material as of June 01. The panel also highlights that dating Web sites are not the only online provider of prostitution coverage, with Internet-based classified ads, blog listings, and message bulletin boards all apparently guilty of such behaviour.

The Beijing Online News and Information Panel was set up in 2006 in association with the publicity department of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and its aim is to track Web sites reported by China's ever-growing community of Netizens - which presently stands in excess of 144 million people.
