In China, attitudes towards sex are slowly changing yet still the majority of
people feel rather shy about talking about not only sex, but also protection.
Giving people complimentary condoms at the end of a meal turns some of the
patrons scarlet, whilst others accept the gift graciously.
"Our customers are mainly young people so they are quite open minded.
Therefore, they can accept our concept. They may be surprised at first but
would still smile and accept it," Kun says.
To make it less awkward for patrons the condom is hidden in a post-it pad.
Those people wanting to share their views on the prevention of AIDS are
encouraged to write a short message and post it onto the restaurant's message
board.
While enterprises that uphold societal values are a norm in the West, it is
still a new concept in Asia. "One of our shareholders, Dr Fang Yi Fang, is a
US-educated professor and another studied at Japan.
Their exposure induced the belief of doing business while promoting social
responsibilities." Li Kun remarked. Taking the first step to promote the
awareness of condoms in China to combat its growing AIDS problem may well
trigger a new wave of liberalism. Lets hope these progressive ideas help to
create a new breed of condom-loving entrepreneurs.
