11 jailed in China's largest case of Internet porn

Eleven people have been jailed for up to 12 years for running an obscene website in China's largest case of Internet pornography, the People's Court Daily said.

The sentences were handed down on Friday by the Hefei intermediate court in the central province of Anhui, the paper reported

Shao Rong waits for trial in the intermediate court in Hefei. [Xinhua] Wang Yong and Shao Rong were described as the main operators of the website - 99 Sex Forum. The website was set up in 2002 and run from an overseas server, the report said.

Apart from posting pornographic pictures, videos and stories, the website had chatrooms and information on prostitution throughout China, it said.

In November 2004 the website had nearly 76,000 registered users and had earned some 220,000 yuan (26,000 dollars), the report said.

In July 2004 China launched a crackdown on Internet porn.

The crackdown reflects growing concerns about the negative influence of the Internet on youngsters.

China has an Internet population of 100 million with the great majority of web users aged under 24.
