Hong Kong nudists want their own colony
January 19, 2005
Hong Kong - Nudists in Hong Kong are asking for permission to take over a
deserted outlying island to open the territory's first naturist colony, a news
report said on Tuesday.
The nudists want to use one of the tiny deserted islands off the east coast of
Hong Kong's rural New Territories to set up the colony to avoid upsetting
residents.
A holiday villa and areas for barbecues, swimming, hiking, yoga, boating and
photography would be set up on the island, according to the South China Morning
Post.
The president of one nudist group, the Body Arts Association, Simon Cheung,
told the newspaper: "Anyone who comes to the island has to strip off
completely."
"We have looked into the experience of nudist camps in Europe. They have all
helped to stimulate local economies and tourism."
The colony would be the first of its kind in Hong Kong. Nudism is rare in
Chinese and Asian communities because of people's generally conservative
attitudes towards exposing bare flesh.
The nudists will seek permission from the Sai Kung District Council, which has
authority over the outlying islands for the proposed colony.
"We expect that some conservative residents will not like the idea," Cheung
admitted.
The association was set up three years ago and has 440 members including 100
women and 10 couples, the newspaper said.
