TV show to unmask sexual taboo
December 2, 2004
Beijing - China's first nationally-televised show about sex will get
participants talking freely but allow them to wear masks to avoid
embarrassment, a state-run Chinese newspaper said on Tuesday.
The late-night educational programme, The Masks, would air on more than 50
provincial and city channels, the newspaper said. Viewers can tune in beginning
January 1.
"Breaking the taboo of talking about sex in public, the show reflects a
changing society, and a positive change at that," the newspaper said.
Attitudes about sex have relaxed since China began Western-style market reforms
in 1978, but even in booming cities like Shanghai and Beijing, it is still
considered an off-limits topic for most Chinese families.
Surveys often show high levels of ignorance and dissatisfaction with people's
sex lives.
