China jails 13 in crackdown on porn
October 24, 2004
Beijing - China has sentenced 13 people to prison for trafficking in
pornographic DVDs, with the ringleader getting a 19-year jail term, in its
biggest yet case against peddlers of the black market films, local media say.
Another three were acquitted in the case heard in the southeastern province of
Guangzhou, the People's Court Daily said on Saturday. Details of the other
sentences were not immediately available.
The gang was arrested after police in the region found more than 6 million DVDs
in raids last March. Most of them were pornographic, and those that were not
were illegally produced, the Yangcheng Evening News said.
It said the group had made profits of more than 3.5 million yuan (230,000
pounds) from the sale of the DVDs.
China has been stepping up its battle against smut, threatening distributors of
Internet and mobile phone pornography with life in prison.
It has also shut down hundreds of Web sites and arrested more than 300 in
connection with Internet pornography.
