Hong Kong - Chinese police have ordered a Hong Kong legislative candidate to
six months' detention after allegedly finding him naked with a prostitute in
the city of Dongguan.
Democratic Party candidate Alex Ho was sentenced to six months of "re-education
through labor" in a mainland detention center within hours after police broke
into his hotel room Friday night, allegedly finding him with a prostitute, the
Hong Kong Standard reported. Ho was on a regular business trip at the time.
There was no arrest warrant, no lawyer, and no trial. Chinese authorities
insisted the arrest and immediate sentencing were normal procedure under
Chinese law. They also said Ho had signed a confession.
However late reports are now saying that Ho may be released on a 'medical
parole' pending a physical examination. Such a turn of events in such matters
in not unusual in these types of detentions.
Democratic Party members initially suggested the arrest was a political plot.
Later they downplayed the idea, reportedly in the interest of securing his
release.
Under Hong Kong law, a sentence of more than three months within five years of
election day disqualifies a candidate from running for office. The Electoral
Affairs Commission has not yet determined whether Ho's detention constitutes
imprisonment and disqualifies him from running for a legislative seat.
