China launches campaign to close down 'phone sex' services

August 18, 2004

China has ordered a nationwide blitz to wipe out "phone sex" services that it says are corrupting the country's younger generation, state media reported Wednesday.

The crackdown will run parallel with a sweeping government campaign to weed out pornography from China's rapidly growing Internet, Xinhua news agency said.

"With the rapid development of the paid call service market in China, some lawbreakers make use of this form to spread obscene information and even conduct prostitution," said Minister of Information Industry Wang Xudong.

"This depraves social morals, and especially brings great harm to the country's young minds."

Wang ordered local governments across the country to shut down "phone sex" operators and "severely punish the responsible organizations".

"This task must be finished before October 1," he said.

The campaign reflects Chinese authorities' growing concerns not just about the negative influence of sex and pornography on the country's youngsters, but also the general ethical standards of the nation's youth.

Last month, the government kicked off a campaign to clamp down on Internet pornography to protect "the physical and mental health of the young people".

Xinhua said that so far Chinese police have closed down about 700 porn websites and arrested 329 suspects.
