Hundreds arrested in China's 'war' on Internet porn
July 28, 2004
China has arrested 224 people in its "war" against pornography on the Internet,
according to state media.
The suspects were arrested in the days since the nationwide crackdown was
launched on July 16, the Xinhua news agency cited sources from the Ministry of
Public Security saying.
No details were given on what the suspects allegedly did.
But some of the suspects arrested allegedly operated lucrative and popular
websites which charged visitors for viewing pornographic pictures of videos.
One of the suspects, a 19-year-old man, launched a site in April which got
three million visits and enjoyed a membership of 66,095 users, Xinhua said.
The report said Chinese police also shut down nearly 700 pornographic websites
during a 10-day period.
It did not say whether the websites were overseas or local sites.
Last week, state media reported Beijing authorities alone had blocked 988
overseas websites and shut down 67 local ones.
The crackdown on Internet porn comes as authorities found hundreds of websites,
including the most influential ones, publish indecent or pornographic content.
The campaign reflects Chinese authorities' growing concerns about the negative
influence of the Internet on the country's youngsters, many of whom make up the
country's 80 million-strong, and still growing, number of Internet users.
Many citizens assisted police by reporting porn sites, Xinhua said.
The ministry reported receiving 733 phone calls and 16,711 online reports since
it publicised two phone numbers and a website for people to report sites.
