China wages people's war against web pornography

July 22, 2004

The Chinese government has reportedly started a crackdown on Internet pornography, by imposing a ban on the sale of transvestite sex videos, secret web-cams and nude profiles.

According to The Straits Times, Beijing has set up a hotline inviting people to call and register their complaints about Web sites that promote salacious content.

The government's security bureau and courts then decide which leads to pursue, although no one knows what criteria they use in blocking the content.

China's moral arbiters claim that this campaign is aimed at safeguarding the brittle ethnicity of the young.

However, some adults have complained that this move is obstructing their right to enjoy adult entertainment.

This campaign is one in a series targeting China's young people, who, the government assumes are spoilt and need more moral counterweight.

It has also warned them against drug abuse, AIDS and other social ills. Plans to revamp moral education in schools are also under consideration.
