Ankara - Besiktas playmaker Sergen Yalçin testified at a special hearing yesterday regarding his involvement an infamous prostitution case, aptly code-named Operation Prostitution.

Yalçin asked for a special hearing to give testimony on grounds that he was away on the day he was originally scheduled to appear in court, at meetings on transfer negotiations with Belgium's Anderlecht club and Turkish Kayseri Erciyesspor.

Operation Prostitution nabbed four suspects who are being tried for aiding and abetting a prostitution ring. Twenty-three people, including several famous faces from the football and entertainment world, are implicated in the case.

Sergen said in his testimony that he knew two of the suspects, Dinçer Dinçsoy and Suat Yildiz, in a show-biz capacity but claimed he had never made any prostitution-related phone calls to the people in question.

He added that it was possible that other people could have placed calls from his mobile as the phone in question was usually kept by his manager.

Soccer player Necati Ates also asked for a special hearing to give testimony on grounds that he would be away at training camp during the trial, adding it could be damaging to his family life if he gave his testimony during the session.

The indictment claims suspects Yildiz, Bülent Tetik, Dinçsoy and Aysel Erentok were part of a high-end prostitution ring, soliciting on behalf of 23 prostitutes including singer Fulden Uras and TV show Big Brother's Hülya Yamanoglu.

The prosecution is seeking jail sentences for the four ranging from two to 64 years in prison.
