Russian woman pleads guilty to forcing niece into prostitution

December 12, 2005

Los Angeles - A Russian-American woman faces up to 21 months in prison after pleading guilty to forcing her niece to work as a prostitute.

Alena Okhotina of Los Angeles pleaded guilty yesterday to one count of trafficking a person into servitude, in exchange for the dropping of other federal charges.

Investigators say that in 2003, Okhotina paid six thousand dollars to obtain a fraudulent visa for her niece, then forced her to have sex with men in Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

Her niece, who was 18 at the time, told investigators Okhotina hid her passport, destroyed her plane ticket home and subjected her to regular beatings, threats and rape by strangers.

The niece was freed after she called police. She has since returned to Russia.
