Azerbaijan passes anti-human trafficking law

The Azerbaijani parliament passed the Law on Fighting Human Trafficking on Tuesday. The law is expected to increase the efficiency of activities at combating human trafficking in the country, said deputy chair of the parliamentary commission on human rights.

Rabiyyat Aslanova termed the measure as an important in terms of protecting human rights.

Special rehabilitation centers will be set up in Azerbaijan for people affected by human trafficking. Their work will be overseen by the national coordinator, she said.

Aslanova continued that relevant supplements will be made to the Criminal Code and the country's laws to ensure that individuals committing such crimes are brought to justice.

The MP said that 161 people have been held criminally accountable for human trafficking over the past year. The number of people affected by such crimes has reached 283, including 270 Azerbaijani citizens.

There were some allegations earlier linking foreign citizens to human trafficking offenses due to irregularities in the process of adopting children.

The recently passed law is believed to deal with illegularities.
