US urges 'greater' Tajik efforts to fight human trafficking
June 6, 2005
Dushanbe - The US embassy in Tajikistan has called on the [Tajik] government to
adopt a national action plan to coordinate efforts in the fight against human
trafficking, increase the number of people convicted of human trafficking and
provide greater assistance and protection to human trafficking victims.
The US embassy in Dushanbe said the embassy hailed Tajikistan's positive
actions in this sphere. The source noted that the US Department of State
anticipated the Tajik government's further cooperation in "eliminating human
trafficking and all forms of modern slavery".
The US Department of State has issued the fifth annual report on human
trafficking, in which Tajikistan has been rated second. This indicates that
Tajikistan does not fully meet the minimal standards adopted. However, it is
taking important steps to achieve the standards.
"In 2004, the Tajik government made considerable efforts to fight human
trafficking, including the adoption of a comprehensive law on combating human
trafficking, the setting up of a special unit and an interdepartmental
commission for fighting human trafficking," the report says.
