Russian reality show accused of prostitution and pimping
May 25, 2005
Russian MPs are demanding that the reality show “Dom” (House) be banned from
television and that its hosts be imprisoned for up to three years, as they say
the show is a form of organized prostitution and pimping which seriously harms
the morals of Russia’s youngsters, the daily Kommersant paper reports.
The MPs say the rules of the show prompt participants to engage in sexual
intercourse on air to be awarded the main prize.
’Dom: Build Your Love’ is a Russian reality show, with 15 constantly changing
participants, who have to find partners and pair off by the end of the show.
The three couples who prove to be the most affectionate will win the show’s
main prize — a house.
“The show is an example of sexual exploitation of people in commercial
purposes,” runs the complaint that the Duma’s Public Health Committee sent to
Russia’s prosecutor general.
“The show has repeatedly broadcast acts of masturbation and petting,” the
letter goes on to say.
“The show propagates sex before marriage and sex out of marriage, promiscuity,”
head of the Committee and one of the authors of the letter Ludmila Stebenkova
told the newspaper.
“This is all a form of getting the show’s participants involved in
prostitution,” she added. “The prize is huge; to receive it young people
imitate love and enter sexual intercourse for purely pragmatic reasons.”
“What’s more, the show popularizes immoral behavior stereotypes: swearing,
rows, arguments and scheming,” Stebenkova said.
President Putin will soon receive a letter of complaint too, she added.
