Russian company charged over selling 300 girls
January 27, 2005
Vladivostok - An employment company registered in Russia's Far East stood
accused of selling about 300 girls abroad after luring them with promises of
jobs in Europe, local prosecutors said today.
"Over the past two and a half years the company exported to Israel and China
some 300 young women", who were stripped of their documents as soon as they
arrived at their surprise destination and were later sold to the highest
bidder, prosecutors in the Far Eastern city of Khabarovsk said.
Each girl fetched the company's owners a fee of up to $US3500 ($4550),
officials said, adding that one of the owners had already been arrested.
Four accomplices have given undertakings not to leave the country.
At least a million women become sex slaves each year, mainly from the former
Soviet republics, where many women leave home in hopes of a high-paying job
abroad and are turned into sex slaves the moment they cross the border.
According to official figures, up to 15,000 Russian women could be in sex
slavery in China alone, with more than 140 criminal groups involved in the
trade.
