Tajik journalists trained on reporting human trafficking

July 30, 2004

Journalists in Tajikistan discussed ways the media can combat human trafficking at a recent workshop in the southern city of Kulyab.

Twenty journalists from throughout southern Tajikistan attended the workshop on investigating and reporting on human trafficking from July 19 to 22. It was organized by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

According to the OSCE Center in Dushanbe, workshop participants discussed methods of identifying human trafficking, and ways for media, civil society and governmental institutions to cooperate in combating the problem. Participants also discussed international legislation to fight trafficking, including a recent law adopted in Tajikistan in July.

Local government officials voiced their appreciation for the workshops and said they hoped it would help journalists better understand the issue.
